VIDEO: Double trouble with birth of rare alpaca twins
IT'S double trouble at Kingsthorpe Alpaca stud Double H with the delivery of a unique set of twins.
While it is common for alpacas to conceive twins, it is rare for both to survive, making their healthy birth eight days ago so special.
Double H owner Margaret Hassall said the birth of the twins, a boy and a girl, caught her by surprise
"Mum and I usually pair the new born cria (baby Alpaca) with their mothers to ensure they feed. We weren't expecting any twins so when there was one extra cria left over we couldn't work out who its mother was," Ms Hassall said.
"It was only then did we realise we had twins which was a nice surprise.
Ms Hassall has yet to name the new additions to her 380 strong alpaca farm, but said they were a bundle of energy and were fitting in well.
"Alpacas grow up really quickly and it seems these twins are no different," she said.
"They are fully feeding from their mother with only a few diet supplements added by myself.
As well as two new twins to chase after, Ms Hassall said it will be a busy month at Double H
"We have just come back from a busy three days at the Toowoomba Show, it is National Alpaca Week this week and we will be hosting an open day at Double H Alpaca Stud from May 9-11," she said.
