It's double the fun at Yaralla Oval

CRICKET: While all the Gladstone teams in both the Frenchville Sports Club Capricorn Challenge and the Gladstone Cricket Incorporated competitions take a well-deserved break for the Australia Day Long Weekend, a popular tradition continues at Yaralla Oval.

It's the Yaralla Double Wicket Competition which starts at 9am on Saturday and even though it's a social event, the competitive juices will flow.

Yaralla Cricket Club A-grade captain-coach Matt Fairhall is also the event organiser and he explained the concept.

"The Double Wicket attracts 16 of the finest teams that can be assembled and will feature current and former players of the Yaralla Cricket Club, father and son teams and even one local business," he said.

"Each team of two players get four overs to bat and make as many runs as they can.

"Once a batsmen is out, however, he is out and their partner continues on until they too are dismissed or their four overs end.

"This pair then bowls four overs to their opponents and whichever team finishes with the higher score progresses to the next round."

It's a single elimination competition featuring short boundaries and short run ups for bowlers.

"There are currently 14 teams signed up leaving two team spots available for anyone wanting a fun day and a chance at the $300 first prize generously donated by the Yaralla Sports Club, along with incredible raffles and prizes on the day," Fairhall said.

"Spectators a more than welcome to come down to the ground and enjoy and burger and a laugh, with big hitting and wicket galore to be on display."

Forecast passing showers are not expected to halt play, but lost balls from big hits may!
