It's child's play for Laith who has faith in his power boat

POWERBOATS: Gladstone man Laith Brown describes his chosen sport as 'speedway on water'.

He loves to push the pedal to the metal and propel his Child's Play-built boat called Wanted Victim to speeds of more than 220kmh.

Brown will do just that in a number of competitions early in the new year.

"In January we head away to the first round of the USA verse Australia BAD Boat Challenge in Sydney and the following weekend is the Australia Day weekend, we head to Berri in South Australia," he said.

"It's a two-weekend combined series."

Brown has an 18ft fixed Child's Play model driven by two small-block Chev engines with a 671 Super Charger on top.

"Both engines are around your 1200-1400 horsepower mark," he said.

The format of the races is three laps and includes up to eight to nine boats per heat.

"All of us are running Super Charged engines and what they call us is the Unlimited Displacement," he said.

Brown and family used to attend an event called Bundy Thunder which was run annually.

"One year I got a bit excited and I started from juniors in 2011 and raced in them for a couple of years," he said.

"I then progressed into the Six-Sec Pro Stock class and then into the 100mph class in a 17-foot Bannister, so I've come through the ranks."

Naturally he travels far and wide and does most of the racing in Bundaberg and further south.
