It's about to be epic

ROLLER DERBY: After a successful 2016 for Gladstone PCYC Roller Derby's all-female team, The Hustlers, it's time for the Haul Stars to join the limelight again.

The co-ed, or mixed gender team, will be back in action this Saturday for the Epic Bout at the PCYC.

Haul Stars' Jess McKim-Hill said the opposition would be interesting.

"It is a team drawn out of a hat and is a pot luck team called Team Epic,” she said.

"They are skaters from all over the place.”

Jess said the night would be competitive with the focus on skills.

"The bouts are more or less the most relaxed ones and they are not full-length bouts,” she said.

"The night will be competitive, but it is more about developing individual skills and experience with the help of the 100-plus skaters attending the Epic Scrim event over the weekend.”

Part of the Haul Star team is Jess's husband Brett.

He said he use to skate when there was a roller skating centre in town.

"I heard about the Gladstone PCYC Roller Derby and decided to join in,” Brett said.

"It's a really good exercise and lot's of fun because our whole family are involved.”

Jess encourages new skaters to come to the bout because it may then persuade them to go to training.

"People can come down and train Tuesday nights from 6pm and Sundays at 1pm,” Jess said.

"You don't need any experience and all the skills are taught ... just bring a bottle and wear comfortable clothes.”
