Saints go marching in to finals
BITS Saints are in the 2010 AFL Capricornia grand final, after a 26-point win over hot favourites the Yeppoon Swans.
Hailed an emotional win by coach Adam Dickenson, the victory puts the club into three out of five grand finals to be played this Saturday.
“I had a feeling before the game it was going to be our day,” Dickenson said, even though BITS hadn't registered a win over Yeppoon in two years.
After being jumped in the first quarter, the Swans getting a quick four-goal buffer, BITS clawed their way back into the match.
A match-turning move of putting Damon Stebbings onto Swans full forward Dan Watkin stemmed the goals, and at the first break BITS enjoyed a three-point lead.
“I just reinforced to the boys it was going to be our day, and to keep it up because we were in it,” the coach said.
The BITS midfield, however, went to sleep for a patch in the second term, allowing the Swans back in.
“We stopped manning up the way we had in the first quarter, but eventually the midfielders tightened up,” he said.
During the third quarter, BITS skipped away to a handy three-goal lead.
“The momentum kept shifting as it does in finals, they'd kick a couple then we'd we kick a couple,” Dickenson said.
The Swans gave it everything in the last quarter and got to within five points, before BITS let loose.
BITS full forward John Beirouti scored eight majors, while best players included Keith Bilston, Dan Hunt, Damon Stebbings, Leon Gray and Myles Clarke.
Final score: BITS 17.7.109 defeated Yeppoon Swans 12.11.83.
