It ain't all argie-bargie
BEFORE taking up roller derby two years ago Emma Johnston or Candy Contusions had never skated before.
Now she can't imagine her life without it.
"After I saw the movie Whip It it seemed like a fun sport," she said.
"Then I heard they were starting a Gladstone team."
One of her friends coined the name Candy Contusions from some of Emma's tattoos and it stuck.
The alter-ego is one of the reasons she stayed with the sport and mastered her staking technique.
"I like that it's different from traditional sports," she said.
"We welcome everybody.
"But it's also a good way to get out your violent side."
Emma has racked up the injury count since she started the sport and dislocated her kneecap last year.
"Normally I'm the one injuring other people though," she laughed.
"I've thrown a few elbows to the face.
"I love blocking and hitting people."
But it's not all about heavy hitting.
"It actually has a lot of strategy behind it."
