Is Dom is good for Clinton
SOCCER: Clinton get the chance to have another crack at Frenchville in next Saturday's Football Central Queensland Premier League grand final.
It presents Clinton with the perfect opportunity to get revenge after Frenchville gained direct entry to the grand final with a 2-0 win nine days ago in the major semi-final.
Dominic Barra kicked the only goal of the game against Cap Coast in the preliminary final on Saturday night inside the first minute into the cut-throat contest.
Clinton assistant coach Dan Horton says a fast start was key to the end result.
"For the second week in a row we started very quickly with a goal in the first 51 seconds,” Horton said.
With more than 25mm falling on the Clinton Oval pitch leading up to the match, Horton added the home side were up for the challenge.
"It was all or nothing in trying conditions on a very heavy pitch,” he said.
"However we were confident we'd get the result playing at home and having a full squad.”
Clinton could have had the game all but wrapped up if not for shots on goal hitting the woodwork twice in the first half and again in the second.
"We dominated large portions of the game and keeping Cap Coast relatively quiet, but for one chance with 15 minutes to go which goal-keeper Matt Varnes pulled off an outstanding save,” Horton said.
Horton said Jibby Holmwood, Barra and Sam Roberts put in outstanding performances for Clinton.
Meanwhile Clinton will meet Cap Coast in the division two decider after Cap Coast defeated Frenchville 4-3 in the preliminary final.
Both grand finals will be played at Apex Park at 5pm and 7pm in Yeppoon.
