Ipswich, Gympie, Nambour face record-breaking heat today

THIS could be the hottest March day in history for Ipswich, Gympie and parts of the Sunshine Coast, as the scorching heat from out west heads towards the Queensland coastline.

Ipswich is facing its hottest day on record with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting the mercury to reach 39.4 degrees this afternoon, topping the 38.9 degrees it sweated through in 2007.

Gympie will be struggling with its maximum of 38 degrees, which is a fraction beneath its hottest day of 38.1, set on the same day as Ipswich's previous record. There is every chance the town may write a new record today.

Nambour on the Sunshine Coast will notch up 37 degrees, a touch below its 37.5 record, but the day is young enough for the suburb to heat up beyond the forecast.

The temperatures are expected to peak between 3pm and 4pm today.

For those not lucky enough for the heat to be historic, it will probably just be frustrating.

Toowoomba is expected to hit 36 degrees, parts of the Gold Coast will reach 37 and Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast will hit 35.

Further north, Rockhampton will cop 36 degrees, Emerald will hit 39 while Mackay will sit smugly on a comfortable 32 degrees.

By 10pm, a cool change will send the heat back out west, giving the eastern parts of the state a reminder that autumn has already begun.
