International award recognises Gladstone harbour master

AN international maritime organisation has paid tribute to Gladstone's regional harbour master Mike Lutze for his work overseeing the port's unprecedented expansion.

The company of Master Mariners of Australia has acknowledged Capt Lutze with an annual outstanding achievement award.

Captain Lutze was still at his post in Gladstone when the announcement was made at an awards ceremony in Melbourne.

"It was a complete surprise. I had just taken the dog for a walk this morning when the news came through," Capt Lutze said.

Construction-related vessel movements in the port have increased from about 1300 movements in July to an average of 23,000 a month.

A panel of master mariners selected Capt Lutze for the prestigious award in recognition of his contribution to the maritime industry, the Gladstone harbour development and his role in mentoring young professionals.
