Independent gets top ballot spot against nine candidates

VOTERS will have plenty of choice at the Federal Election, with nine Flynn candidates listed on the final ballot.

The order on the ballot sheet was set down at Gladstone's electoral office yesterday.

The process of double randomisation - where numbered balls are drawn by a blind-folded person - is supposed to ensure an objective outcome.

But candidates always worry about the dreaded "donkey vote", where people vote from top to bottom on the ballot paper.

Chris Trevor drew the short straw this time around, finishing in the ninth position, while independent Craig Tomsett got the lucky number one position.

LNP candidate Ken O'Dowd came in second.

Mr Tomsett was pleased with the number one spot but also said he was a realist, and believed one of the major party candidates would get across the line.

"I want the community to understand that we need leaders who will tell the truth no matter how bad it is," he said.

"I will claim and explain every decision I make."

Human rights and equality were among Mr Tomsett's top priorities in the election - from how to deal with asylum seekers down to treating school children equally.

When it came to asylum seekers he said both parties were dealing with the end issue, and not "why" it was happening.

Mr Tomsett said it would be cheaper for the government to re-house asylum seekers in Australia with a package that would get them working and contributing to the nation.

"Our local community is being disintegrated," he said.

He said even the hospital needed to be upgraded in case of an industrial accident.

"Surely this town and what it produces for the GDP we should have the best hospital in the area."

In ballot paper order:

1. Craig Tomsett, IND

2. Ken O'Dowd, LNP

3. Duncan Scott, IND

4. Kinglsey Dickins, RUA

5. Serena Thompson, GRN

6. Renae Moldre, FF

7. Steve Ensby, PUP

8. Richard Love, KAP

9. Chris Trevor, ALP
