Telecommunications an issue for outlying towns

BUSINESS owner and Calliope resident Desley O'Grady wants to see the outer towns of the Gladstone region - such as Rules Beach, Baffle Creek and Calliope - better connected to Gladstone city.

"People in the country I believe do get forgotten about, because they have access to the Gladstone town," she said.

Her top vision was to see communication improved across the region.

"Telecommunications for the whole region is a big issue, especially in the Boyne Valley," she said.

"That would be my vision, so that everyone has facilities to communicate effectively.

"Boyne Valley doesn't even have mobile service, and it's just 20km up the highway."

Mrs O'Grady said she also wanted to see a new large indoor arena in Calliope.

"This has been on the back burner for a number of years."

Her comments come as a committee is working towards building a vision for Gladstone's future.

The committee charged with drafting the plan has conducted an initial community survey which found we value our family and friends, the cost of living is our biggest challenge and tourism presents a good opportunity for the future.

The Vision2035 committee is keen to hear more in a series of workshops this week.

The committee is in the second stage of drafting a new vision for the region.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the workshops, and provide input to the plan.

Associate director of research company Futureye, Cath Smith, will facilitate the sessions with local committee members.

Ms Smith will talk about the results of the survey before small group discussions about potential scenarios and events, what people want to happen, and how to ensure desired events happen.

"People have talked about the gap between what's available in town and two hours out of town," she said.

"There's a big disparity. How can we make sure these opportunities and services are shared?"
