Ergon Energy overcharged woman by hundreds of dollars

GRANVILLE woman Ann Cameron is urging others to make sure the numbers stack up, after being overcharged by hundreds of dollars on her most recent electricity bill.

"It seems to me the person wrote it down or transferred the numbers incorrectly," Ms Cameron said.

She contacted Ergon Energy and asked if the company could send a person to re-read her meter.

Ergon told her she would have to pay, so Ms Cameron said she would read it herself over the phone.

The company then reissued her with the correct bill but Ms Cameron said she was now worried about others being overcharged and wanted to make people aware mis-readings could happen.

Ergon Energy spokesman Mark Timmerman said contractors were used to read meters throughout regional Queensland and their performance was monitored.

He said meters were visually checked each quarter, or monthly in the case of business meter reads, with defects reported for further inspection.

"It is very rare for there to be inaccuracy with the metering equipment itself," he said.

He said Ergon had an automatic audit processes in its billing system.

"For example, an unusually high bill from one quarter to the next will generally prompt automatic billing system queries within Ergon's systems."

Ergon's advice

  • If you suspect a bill inaccuracy, phone Ergon Energy on 131 046
  • Often an over-the-phone audit of an account and consumption history can resolve billing issues
  • Ergon reminds customers to ensure access is available to their meters to avoid estimated accounts
