Nature inspires vibrant mosaic artwork along Esplanade
IF you walk along the Esplanade in Tannum Sands, a vibrant new installation is sure to catch your eye.
It has required nearly 10,000 tiles, but Janie Petersen's creative vision has finally reached completion.
The community played their part in seeing the mosaic come to fruition at last weekend's Beach Arts Music Festival.
Kids and adults alike sat at a picnic table for the duration of the afternoon, gluing tiles and watching their creation come to life.
Petersen, a German-born Beecher resident says the project which has taken much of the year so far, will be her artistic legacy for the region.
"It is a dream come true,'' she said.
"Gladstone is a special place to me but I won't be here forever. The mosaic will.''
The mosaic was inspired by a holiday to Heron Island where Petersen witnessed turtles laying their eggs on the sand.
It features on 10 steps at The Esplanade, opposite the playground.
