Switching off for Earth Hour could help the reef forever

IF YOU are switched on, you will switch off.

Darkness will cover the globe Saturday night for Earth Hour and Gladstone homes and businesses are taking the small step to make a world of difference.

The urgent message being conveyed by Earth Hour 2014 is that the Great Barrier Reef will only survive for 16 years if we do not act now.

Recently appointed Conservation Volunteers regional co-ordinator Jodi Jones said if we don't switch off for the reef, it will permanently switch off to us.

"We are lucky to have such an incredible environment in Gladstone and we need to take the steps to look after it," she said.

"We need to have a better approach in protecting the environment. It's when people do nothing it becomes frightening. It's only an hour out of the day."

The international event is gaining momentum in spreading the vital message of how our actions will cause irreparable damage in the future.

Bendigo Bank, the sponsor of Saturday's event, is hosting an event on the esplanade at Tannum Sands from 7.30pm.

The event will proceed with glowsticks if bad weather persists.

Bendigo Bank customer relationship officer Michelle Johnson said the stand against climate change was particularly relevant for the Gladstone community.

"It's the whole of the world turning their lights off in the hope of conserving energy for one hour," she said. "You can do something small to raise awareness, and this year the focus is on our reef."

"Gladstone is the last bit of land before Heron Island, and so we should all be involved."
