'I thought I was going to die': Pharmacist beaten and robbed

A CALOUNDRA pharmacist who was the target of two separate armed robberies on the weekend is calling for more police patrols in the area.

On Friday evening, a man entered the Caloundra 7 Day Midnight Chemist and allegedly demanded sleeping pills, threatening owner John Younan with a knife.

The man allegedly took off with the medication, but was arrested at Kings Beach.

Police have accused Jay Patrick Casey with one count of armed robbery and seven counts of fraud.

Another man is accused of attempted to rob the same chemist on Sunday night.

Police have charged a 31-year-old Tanawha man after he allegedly confronted Mr Younan with a taser about 12.10am.

The man allegedly assaulted Mr Younan, striking him on the head, and demanded cash before fleeing the scene.

"I turned around to go toward my car after locking up and I saw this guy running toward me with a taser," Mr Younan said.

"I just thought, 'I'm going to die'."

Mr Younan couldn't take any time off work, but he is still suffering from physical and emotional scars.

"I'm still in shock," he said.

"Even though there are lots of physical injuries, there's more emotional ones as well."

He suffered a broken nose, lacerations on his neck and knee and swelling to the eyes.

Mr Younan said in the six months since he'd opened the Caloundra business, he'd never had an issue or felt threatened before.

"I've never seen anything like it before," he said.

Now, the pharmacist is asking for more police patrols around Caloundra at night, especially on weekends.

"The issue is that Caloundra police station is so small, and always busy," he said.

"So even though it's only 300-metres away, it might take half an hour for someone to get here.

"All I ask for is regular police patrolling. Pharmacists are clearly targets, so regular patrolling would help a lot."

Until Mr Younan can install a secure service window for late nights, a private security guard is walking him to his car every night after he closes.

"Obviously I can't afford a lot, but the main thing is to keep me secure," he said.
