"I just want my bike back" - 91-year-old Rockhampton man

IT HAS been his sole source of transport across Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast for the past 68 years. And someone has stolen it.

But 91-year-old Rockhampton man James "Jim" Radel isn't letting the lowlife who stole it get the better of him.

Last Wednesday, Jim parked his bicycle outside the Brunswick Hotel.

He popped in for a quick visit.

When he ducked back out again to head home, the bike was gone. He even started thinking that Alzheimer's was kicking in.

The bike is an older model, blue in colour, with upright handlebars. The word stadium is written across the handlebars and the seat has a white woollen cover.

Jim said to anyone else, the bike wasn't worth another look. But the bike has served its master for the past 68 years as Jim's means of getting about.

He bought the bike in January 1947. About that time, he was working as an insurance agent in Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

He would use the bike to cycle to his clients' homes to follow up on their policies. Jim used his bike then to travel from Rockhampton to Yeppoon about once a fortnight.

He said his bike gave him his independence. When you meet Jim, you wouldn't think he was 91; his attitude certainly isn't.

"I've got all my faculties... if my legs can keep up with my mouth, I've got it made," he said. "If you don't enjoy life, you're a bloody fool."

If you have any information that could help Jim get his bike back, call The Bulletin on 4930 4253.
