Unlicensed man tried to drive his dog to Brisbane

JAMES Dean Kranz loves his dog Chucky so much the disqualified driver paid $300 for a well-used car to drive his prized pooch south.

The pair didn't get far down the Bruce Hwy before police pulled their old unregistered Ford Laser over and quickly found Kranz was unlicensed after a court disqualification.

Kranz, 31, a labourer, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to driving disqualified on August 29; and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Snr Constable Sam Pyke said Kranz had been disqualified for two years just three weeks before and told police he knew that following an unlicensed driving offence in March.

Duty lawyer Jun Pepito said Kranz lost his job in Gladstone and wanted to move to Brisbane.

He told magistrate Robert Walker that arrangements with a friend to collect his dog and take him to Brisbane fell through and he was unable to travel on the bus with his dog Chucky.

"He made the foolish decision to buy a $300 car to drive to Brisbane because he could not find anyone to drive the dog," Mr Pepito said.

Mr Walker said the story "stretches the bounds of credibility".

The magistrate looked at Kranz's history of traffic offences, saying he was fined $750 for driving unlicensed in 2014, fined $500 in another incident, then fined $300 in March this year and disqualified for two years.

"It appears fines fail to deter you. It is a serious offence and goes to the safety of other road users," Mr Walker said.

He told Kranz that because his car was unregistered and uninsured it meant that if he was involved in an incident with another vehicle, other drivers would have no recourse to his insurance and lead to further losses.

"You made a stupid decision to drive. The story I was told stretched credibility," Mr Walker said.

"You own a dog... and exhausted options to transport him so you decided to drive the dog in a $300 car, that's all I will say about it."

Mr Walker said a fine was not appropriate and he jailed Kranz for three months, immediately suspending the sentence for 12 months.

Outside court Kranz said Chucky was his only family here.

"He's not going anywhere without me," he said.
