Hustlers strong defence helps them claim victory up north

AIRLIE Beach was the peaceful setting, yet the action was anything but, as the Harbour City Hustlers steamrolled their way to victory over the northern Queensland-based Muff 'n' Men.

The Hustlers headed to the backpacker haven on May 31 for the roller derby match-up with a difference.

It was the first time the Hustlers had faced up against men in a full-contact bout, with the Muff 'n' Men a mixed gender side.

Despite matching up against blokes, Gladstone's only roller derby team proved that knowledge of the game was paramount, routing the north Queenslanders 324-99.

Hustlers' coach Charlie Keenan was pleased with the result, as his team fine-tunes before playing host to Paradise City on June 28.

"We wanted to step out of the comfort zone," Keenan said.

"I expected it to be a bit more of a tougher ask than it was but we just had to make sure our defence was strong."

Hustlers' skater 'Ale Mary' Bolling said they had taken on the challenge to hone their teamwork and skills ahead of the next bout.

"Roller derby is still growing in Queensland so it can be hard to find other teams to take on, especially when we need to coordinate travel," Bolling said.

The Numbers:

  • The Hustlers had a huge win up in Airlie Beach in their first full-contact bout against a mixed team.
  • Harbour City Hustlers 324 def Muff 'n' Men 99
  • Hustlers led 99-9 within first 10 minutes
