Hundreds donate after new mum dies in hospital

FAMILY and friends are rallying around a new Rockhampton dad whose wife tragically died giving birth to their first child.

What was supposed to be one of the happiest days of Amanda Sheppard's life turned to grief for her husband Glynn when Amanda died during an elected caesarean operation.

The death has sparked an investigation by the hospital and Queensland Health though the Queensland Nurses Union says the tragedy was not the result of any staffing or safety issues.

The Rockhampton woman suffered complications and died in theatre as she delivered her "beautiful daughter Willa". Authorities will investigate whether a suspected embolism, an obstruction of an artery, contributed to the death.

Baby Willa is said to be doing well in hospital.

A fundraising campaign has been set up to help the family with $17,155 raised towards a $20,000 target as of yesterday evening.

"This day was supposed to be one of the best & happiest days of their lives & instead Amanda is leaving her beloved husband Glynn & brand new baby girl behind," the Go Fund Me page reads.

"Times right now are hard for Husband & their families & My heart is aching for them through this hard time.

"So I'm starting this Gofundme account to raise a little money to help them out a little with whatever it may be that they need..

"I would love to raise as much as I can to help them out.

"So please any donations big or small will go a long way to help out with any costs he needs & for his gorgeous little girl."
