Hughes hits ton as Redbacks hit back at SCG

PHIL Hughes has sent another reminder to national selectors that he is ready to pull on the baggy green again with another century for South Australia.

Playing against New South Wales in their Shield match at the SCG, the Redbacks opener (pictured) hit 16 boundaries on his way to 118 before being caught at first slip off a rising delivery from paceman Trent Copeland.

With the in-form Callum Ferguson chipping in with 80, South Australia finished the second day at 5-288 in replay to the Blues' first innings of 373. Copeland was the pick of the NSW bowlers, finishing with 3-83 from 30 overs on a day that promised to offer the quick men plenty of assistance thanks to overcast skies.

Three early wickets saw the visitors go to lunch at 3-88, before a 144-run stand between Hughes and Ferguson got the innings back on track. Skipper Johan Botha will resume on 32.
