CRICKET: BITS Oval will be the place to be on Saturday and Sunday as the cricket season swings into action.
The Sims Metal Industries of Gladstone 20/20 Cricket Challenge will have bragging rights up for grabs between industrial companies Orica, SANTOS GLNG, BSL, APLNG, QGC, Rio Tinto, QAL and GPC.
Organiser Nev Judd said the event is growing in stature.
"Now in its ninth year, the Industries Challenge has developed into a festival of social cricket with a full fixture of games as well as kids' entertainment and mini markets for all to enjoy," he said.
"Industries Cup winners QAL will be hoping to defend their title, however each year the cricket skills improve as competing companies strive to win."
Judd said the event is unique in that eight of the region's largest industrial sites will compete against each other.
"The popularity of the event has grown over the nine years and next year there may even be room to expand to 10 teams with the new lights at BITS Oval," Judd added.
And it may pay to park away from BITS Oval because Judd said there will be balls that will clear the fence.
Judd said that the standard of cricket had gone up a couple of levels over the last few years as many club cricketers started to join in.
"Last year QAL beat BSL by four runs with two guys each smashing fast 100s from both teams which was fantastic to see," Judd said.
"This year's form guide is wide open although BSL could shed the bride's maid tag with a formidable team already assembled.
"But don't discount QAL who have won four times or the likes of APLNG and QGC."
The traditional Boyne Island versus Tannum Sands match is on under lights from 5.45pm Saturday and is sure to attract a large crowd.
