How Terry cleaned up with a big career change

HE MIGHT have been getting a mining pay cheque for 15 years, but Terry Comiskey said the industry made him miserable.

"I was a diesel fitter in the underground coal mines... it was a terribly negative atmosphere to be around," he said.

"You turn up to work and I find there is more stress in going to the mines than it is running a business. You are not there to do a fair day's work for a fair day's pay, you are just there to fill in and it was a pretty up and down lifestyle.

"I just couldn't handle it anymore; I needed to get away from it."

And get away he did.

Terry has opened up a gutter cleaning franchise that services Central Queensland including Rockhampton, Emerald, Gladstone, Blackwater, Yeppoon and Tieri.

While the region has taken an economic hit, Terry is optimistic about the future.

He said owning his own business had been a dream of his for the past six years, and knew it was time to make it a reality when he saw Gutter-Vac advertised online.

"I just wanted to have a safe business where I could still look after my home and my toys and have a good life," he said.

"I had been looking and I applied for a few different franchises; I had gotten to the contract signing and found that they weren't generating money. Then Gutter-Vac popped up and I thought, hey that is something I am interested in.

"I like getting in the sun and getting to know people."

He said his investigations into the company suggested he could make the same money out of his own small business that he could at the mines, minus the downturn.

The business has been open for almost two months.
