How does Gladstone compare when it comes to growth?
THE latest release of information from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing shows us where Gladstone stands compared to Queensland and Australia.
Nationally, mining has recorded the highest growth in employment since the 2006 Census and Broadsound-Nebo in Queensland is one of the country's main areas.
Gladstone only has 8.4% employed in mining, but the effects of mining in Queensland filter out to Gladstone with our manufacturing industry consisting of 72.7% - an increase of 33.1% since 2006.
Purcell's Lineboring and Engineering managing director Terry Purcell said Gladstone does enjoy the benefits of the mining boom.
"There is heaps of mining work coming into this town - fabrication and machining," he said.
"Gladstone is traditionally an industrial city, so there is a lot of manufacturing to support that.
"We are centrally located between Surat and the Bowen Basin."
Mr Purcell said the business manufactures new and old components for the mining industry such as truck trays.
"(Manufacturing is) to take a bit of raw material and turn it into a machine or fabricated component."
Mr Purcell said Gladstone did not have the biggest manufacturing industry in Australia, but itslocation meant it could quickly meet mining needs.
"In the true sense of manufacturing, I think there is a lot more down in Victoria and NSW. They can get it done for cheaper because of lower wages," he said.
"There will always be a manufacturing industry here if (mining companies) can't wait and need it right now.
"Skilled tradespeople are hard to find."
