Hospital theatre upgrade to be officially opened
THE completion of a major upgrade of Gladstone Hospital's high dependency unit and operating theatres will be marked with an official opening tomorrow.
Gladstone state MP Glenn Butcher, Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service chairman Charles Ware and Queensland Gas Corporation (QGC) midstream director Jeff Baillie will take part in the ceremony, which will see a plaque unveiled.
The $1.5 million upgrade was largely funded by QGC and replaced outdated equipment, as well as refurbishing the operating theatres and installation of a special air filtration system which improves infection control by ensuring a minimum of contamination of the air.
The upgrade will mean the hospital will be able to perform more complex operations, and operate at an increased capacity.
Hospital chief executive Frances Forbes said having industry providing funds for the project was amazing. "It shows fantastic support; support that other hospitals would die for."
Theatre staff performed operations in a mobile operating theatre since April this year while the upgrade was undertaken.
