Homemade honey products make for bee-utiful business

YOU would be hard pressed to find anyone more passionate about bees in Bundaberg than Tony and Sharon from Wide Bay Stingless Bees.

Tony Harvey is an experienced beekeeper who began the business rescuing hives of native bees from rural properties before the owners cleared vegetation, and has now expanded to workshops and bee supply.

But over the last two years, Sharon has made use of their abundant honey supply by turning it into products that smell, feel and taste great.

"We do lip balm, beard butter and honey," she said.

"We try and use as much of what we extract as possible."

The honey is sugarbag honey, unique to native stingless bees.

They began with honey before moving on to lip balm, and the beard butter - a drawcard for hippies and hipsters alike - is their latest offering.

"It conditions your beard, makes it softer and makes it smell better, and it also helps the skin underneath which can get quite dry."

They sell at markets including Bundy Flavours and supply a retailer in Sydney, with hopes to one day take their products - and love for bees - around Australia.
