Brothers holds the lead in minor premiership race

BROTHERS have kept the lead in Gladstone A-grade rugby league and the ascendency in the minor premiership race with a 32-28 win over Valleys.

It gives Brothers a three-point lead at the top of the ladder with three weeks remaining in the competition.

The match was played mainly in the middle of the field, both sides' outside backs only getting into the match bringing the ball back from kicks and close to the line in attack.

Opening with exchanged tries in the first half, Valleys lead narrowly 18-14 at half-time in a match either team could easily have had the lead.

The second half began much the same as the first before anger entered the match and a small scuffle broke out in mid-field not long into the half.

A run from Valleys in the middle of the half broke the back-and-forth momentum of the match and looked to have paved the way for a win.

Valleys scored two tries without Brothers touching the ball for a five-minute period in which multiple penalties were given away and Damian Hill was sent to the sin bin.

The momentum suddenly swung back the other way though and Brothers regained the lead through two quick tries on the back of numerous cheap penalties which invited the side into the attacking zone.

Brothers then did a good job of playing the game where they wanted to.

Valleys were unable to score points in the dying minutes, Brothers grinding out a good victory.

There were a couple of moments of excitement during the match, including a brilliant over-the-shoulder pass from Casey McGuire to Josh Essex to set up Brendan Hughes.

Nick Emmett also threw a Justin Hodges-like pass through his legs from dummy half for winger Assan Munro to score.

RESULTS:

Brothers 32 Valleys 28

Try scorers:

Valleys - Ha'ofanga Rabakewa (2), Brendan Hughes, Aaron Hall, Steve Gallen

Brothers - Robbie Congoo, Jackson McEwan, Assan Munro, Trent Iselin, Lachlan Tanzer, Vince Mellor
