Islands net gain

RESEARCHERS on Heron Island will find communication a lot easier after a new antenna is installed at CQUniversity in Gladstone.

The new antenna was installed yesterday, replacing a disused antenna atop a tower on the campus. The antenna will enhance microwave internet access to the research station on Heron Island.

Mark Choquenot from ATI Australia was working on the installation yesterday and said the new antenna would provide 500 megabits per second.

"They need high capacity links (at the research centre)," Mr Choquenot said.

"They are doing complex experimentation, video conferencing and all the other uses they have for this bandwidth we are providing."
