Helping others is a passion for retired couple

WHILE some couples enjoy spending time gardening, cooking and playing golf together, Maureen and Noel Larsen volunteer together.

Mr Larsen, 73, has been giving up his time at Mission to Seafarers Gladstone every week for 29 years.

He has also volunteered at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre for 10 years.

His wife, Mrs Larsen, 68, has been volunteering seriously at Mission to Seafarers for six years and the Gladstone Library for 16 years.

Volunteering is a hobby for the couple that has grown into a passion.

"It's something to do and it's a way of giving," Mr Larsen said.

"We work together instead of staring at each other all day and going batty," Mrs Larsen laughed.

"At Mission to Seafarers we feel we can show love to those who don't have loved ones around."

The idea of volunteering came about when the couple moved to Gladstone in 1985.

"I came to Gladstone as a fitter and turner but I had arthritis in my knees," Mr Larsen said.

"They gave me computer work but I didn't like it so I left.

"Both of our kids were grown up and out of town and we had no grandkids around to look after," Mr Larsen said.

"We knew we had to get out and meet people."

Mrs Larsen works at the convenience store at the Mission to Seafarers centre doing stocking, pricing and ordering of products.

Mr Larsen is mainly the point of contact for sailor's families and provides general support to them.

The couple encourage all people to give up some of their time to help others.
