Help celebrate the region's unsung heroes at awards ceremony

GLADSTONE region residents are encouraged to attend the 2014 Gladstone Regional Council's Australia Day Awards presentation evening on January 25.

The event will run from 6.15pm at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre (GECC).

Gladstone Region Mayor Gail Sellers said the event recognised those who have contributed so much to their community through voluntary work or through their achievements in sporting or cultural fields.

"Each year we are able to acknowledge the many dedicated unsung heroes, and I encourage residents to come along and help celebrate their achievements," Cr Sellers said.

This year the council received 38 nominations across eight categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Arts & Culture Award
  • Senior Sportsperson of the Year
  • Young Sportsperson of the Year
  • Sports Official of the Year
  • Community Event or Initiative of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year

The free presentation evening will feature finger food and entertainment, the singing of the national anthem, speeches and a citizenship ceremony.

All nominees will receive a medallion and a certificate, with winners being announced on the night.
