Heidi’s ahead of the field when it comes to race day glam
WHEN it comes to fashion, prep school teacher Heidi Schumacher likes to create her own style.
She loves race days and makes her own fascinators to match her outfits.
"I just love having a chance to get dressed up, put on your heels that you don't often wear, see the girls, have a lovely day out. And the horses of course," she said.
Heidi has been making fascinators for herself and friends for about two years and has a collection of more than 30.
"I saw some that I really liked, but they were out of my price range so I decided to do it myself," she said.
"The most difficult part is making sure you have the right colours.
"I like colours to match perfectly. I'm a bit of perfectionist that way."
The entire outfit developed over a month before the Cox Plate race day at the Gladstone Turf Club.
"I bought my dress on eBay, the shoes as well, and then I took the dress over to Lincraft where I found a base that I could use to make the fascinator out of.
"I was really happy with it all. Actually, it went together beautifully."
For Heidi's Melbourne Cup lunch at work, she's going for a '50s look with a vintage pillbox hat from her grandmother.
"I've just altered it so it's a bit more modernised," she said.
"Usually I just keep them. I don't need them. I should sell them. I don't have time."
