HEATWAVES are longer and more severe, with an interim report from the Climate Council saying the increasing severity is linked to climate change.

A full version of the interim report was expected to be released next month, with the interim findings saying the number of hot days in Australia has doubled since 1971.

The Council, an independent group of climate scientists formerly part of the Climate Commission, also warned cold days were being out-done by hot days on a rate of three-to-one.
