Healthy store delivers Maccas alternative in the Bay

AS MCDONALD'S prepares for home deliveries across Hervey Bay, local health enthusiasts met with Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell yesterday to encourage the council to promote more healthy alternatives.

Personal trainer Jeanette Maynes said the addition of another fast food delivery service was no excuse for people to live an unhealthy lifestyle.

"After the McDonald's stories we just wanted to get together and let people know there are other options available," Ms Maynes said.

"Obviously obesity and diabetes are an issue here and this McDonald's delivery just provides easy access to unhealthy food."

The Frog Store is one option for home-delivered organic fruit and vegetables in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

The Frog Store's Celine Louie said the boxes, which contain a range of season fruit and veg, cost upwards of $36 dollars and provide a family with one to two weeks' worth of meals.

"It's about filling your fridge with healthy options because if you've got nothing in the fridge you're more likely to get takeaway delivered. People can get these boxes delivered to their door or can pick them up from one of our pick-up points."

Cr O'Connell said while he recognised the investment McDonald's was making in the region, obesity was an issue that needed further attention.

"From a Mayor's point of views it's embarrassing that my community is portrayed as it has been for the last week. You can't beat the statistics but I don't want us to be known as just that.

"I think promoting an opportunity that is convenient, affordable and is healthy is a worthy promotion."
