Healthy food and smoothie cafe to open in Tannum

EVEN when Rick and Kirsty Callander lived at a mine camp, they would take their prepped healthy dinners with them from home.

The couple strives for a healthy lifestyle and will open a takeaway store at Tannum Sands that sells smoothies and cold pressed juices.

Fit Life Smoothie 'n' Snack Bar will open at the 1 Pacific Avenue complex in mid-June.

For the past three years the couple has gone to gyms and tried to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Their most difficult time was when they worked long hours at a Blackwater mine.

"After you work a 13-14 hour day the last thing you want to do is cook when you get home," Mr Callander said.

He wants the shop to appeal to workers who have similar hours to those he and his wife had.

"So many people do work on those sorts of rosters around here so that's why we thought it's a great idea.

"Our idea was, instead of when you walk in and there's a vegan, gym motivated or raw food sort of style, we want to have a place that anyone can walk in to, no matter what lifestyle and we'll have something for them," he said.

For over a year they had wanted to open a health food takeaway store but now opening time is looming, he said it was a "surreal feeling".

"I'm nervous and excited. It's gone from just ideas in a notebook in my pocket at work and now all of a sudden we're taking business calls," he said.

"It's spun our lives around but it's looking good now."

It will be the third shop to open at the 1 Pacific Avenue development.
