Josh Hazlewood praised by ex-Aussie Test star Carl Rackemann

FORMER Australian quick and Queensland legend Carl Rackemann says he would be "amazed" if debutant Josh Hazlewood did not carve out a long career at Test level after completing a five-wicket haul against India at the Gabba.

Hazlewood helped skittle the visitors for 408 on day two, after they had resumed at 4-311.

The tall paceman, from the small town of Bendemeer in country New South Wales, took 3-24 on day two to finish the innings with figures of 5-68.

He proved the peaks and troughs of Test cricket can be dramatic, breaking down twice with cramp on day one in the searing 38C heat, before bouncing back with a bang to snare the key wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (81), MS Dhoni (33) and Ravi Ashwin (35).

Rackemann, who also hails from the bush - he owns a farm just north of Kingaroy in Queensland's South Burnett district - said he could see Hazlewood forging a long career in the baggy green.

"I'd be amazed if we don't see his career (at international level) unfold," Rackemann, himself a 16-year first-class veteran with 616 wickets, and 39 at Test level, told APN.

"I'm definitely pleased for him and we're going to see a lot more of him in the future."

Rackemann said he was particularly impressed by Hazlewood's smooth action.

"His action is totally reliable and there are no sharp edges in it. There's nothing that makes you say 'I don't like that'," the 54-year-old said.

"It's efficient, strong and it's not going to cause him any unnecessary grief.

"His run-up is strong and he's got great power through the crease.

"The end product is he's got terrific pace, his control's good, he stands the seam up. He's got a lot going for him."
