Have you seen red flares lightning up the night sky?

MACKAY police believe the random activation of distress flares in the region is probably "a type of weird joke".

Senior Constable Steve Smith said red distress flares had been set off in Mackay, for no apparent reason, twice recently.

"Unfortunately, there have been two recent incidents in the Mackay police division where individuals have recklessly activated distress flares in the early hours of the morning - one instance on March 8 and the other on March 12," he said.

"Red distress flares were sighted at the western end of Bridge Rd (in the vicinity of the Mackay Base Hospital). The second incident involved multiple people sighted in a vessel at the mouth of the Pioneer River.

"In both instances, information received suggests that the flares were activated recklessly, as a type of weird joke."

Snr Const Smith said activating flares carelessly could lead to a delayed emergency service response to a real life-threatening situation.

"In addition, the reckless or improper use of a distress flare will certainly result in a police investigation," he said.

If you have information which could help police, phone Mackay police station on 49683444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800333000.
