Have a think about helping out at festival next year
WELL, here we are, recovering on a Tuesday after one of the biggest parties Gladstone has seen, the annual Gladstone Harbour Festival.
There are quite a few people wandering around today with eyelids that need to be held up with toothpicks because they have had little if any sleep for the past three weeks to put on this massive celebration of living in our fair city.
Did you know our festival is officially known as Australia's largest free festival? Pretty good for an area that gets overlooked in so many other areas, especially when it comes to over-paid pollies from Canberra.
This festival keeps locals here for the Easter long weekend and thus keeps money locally helping so many people and organisations, from the market stall holders to the food vans to the raffle ticket operators helping local community groups.
Can I ask that you join with me, as Mayor Gail Sellers said at the opening night, to thank the volunteers who take time out of their lives to volunteer for such a lengthy period?
They do ridiculous hours cooking, cleaning, stacking, parading, organising and serving the masses. Thank you!
Some of our volunteers have been doing it since before Jesus ate chocolate, so now is the time to see if you'd like to step up and join the crew
There have been many highlights of this year's festival, from Dame Edna dancing with me at the U2 Show, to Sesame Street's Elmo, Grover and I running around like kids on red cordial and Easter eggs.
The free seafood from the GAPDL, the great stars on display with the Talent Quest and Battle of the Bands, to the mind blowing artists on stage Sunday for Jazz & Shiraz. The Boys in the Band just blew us all away and we loved every second.
While it was a massive effort by the volunteers, it's a great time now to ask you if can help for next year.
Think about it. Some of our volunteers have been doing it since before Jesus ate chocolate, so now is the time to see if you'd like to step up and join the crew and volunteer some of your time next Easter.
You can be doing anything from cooking burgers to serving drinks, helping backstage for the shows, setting up tents, and even making sure our performing artists have what they need to perform their magic.
All it takes is your time. Just have a think, that's all we're asking.
So again, thank you for being a part of this year's Gladstone Harbour Festival.
