Harmarna named overall U12 age champion

HARMANA Williams is an all-round athlete.

The Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club nipper recently competed at the 2012 North Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in Mackay and was named the under-12 age champion.

Harmana, aged 11, has been participating in nippers since she was in green caps, which is a fun introduction to the sport for juniors aged five and six.

Now she is a dedicated athlete, training in the pool five times a weeks and for nippers three times a week under coach Mark Bryant, with an occasional extra Saturday training session.

The hard work has paid off and in Mackay, Harmarna took gold in the beach flags, silver in the surf swim, fifth in the ironwoman and fourth in the sprint race.

Harmana wasn't expecting to receive the overall age champion title but after her good friend Olivia Jenner won it last year for their age group, she hoped she might come close.

"I'm kind of proud of myself," she said.

Hopefully I will get into the state team and do well there."

Also an excellent pool swimmer, Harmana competed in the swimming carnival Liquid Energy last Saturday where she was named runner-up.
