Harbour doesn't get mention in reef promises

THE Queensland Labor Party has pledged to protect the reef and reef wetlands if elected, but there was no mention of the Gladstone harbour.

Annastacia Palaszczuk on Tuesday promised not to allow port expansions in the Fitzroy Delta and Keppel Bay, nor dredging operations at Abbot Point.

Gladstone resident Sandy Coleman said she thought the government was only protecting the least valuable sections of the reef.

"It seems quite clear to me that the Gladstone harbour is seen as a cash cow," she said.

"They aren't looking at the reef in a holistic approach."

WWF Australia welcomed the policy package, saying the new commitments to protect the Fitzroy Delta and the Caley Valley were a positive move.
