Gymnastics trio selected for Australia
THREE Gladstone gymnasts, Aime Parker, Jazmyn Dew and Izabeya Jones have been selected in the Australian team for the upcoming 2016 World Age Group Competition and World Championship event in China.
In what has been a huge week for Aussie representation for our local athletes, the trio will represent Australia in the 12-18 year age division and will be competing from March 27-29.
They will be specializing in the floor-based sport acrobatic discipline of gymnastics.
Other impressive Gladstone sport news:
Parker, Dew and Jones all found out earlier in the week before it was allowed to be made public.
"We found out on Monday on email and then on the Gymnastics Australia website, Dew, 16, said.
It has been an arduous selection process, but all the boxes have been ticked for the three.
"We have done various competitions for trials and then the top two are selected," Dew added.
"The competition goes for three days, but will be training for a week before it starts," Dew said.
Dew and Parker (16 years old) are the eldest while the youngest member is Jones who is just 12 in a young person's sport.
2009 World Games silver medalist and coach Beth Young has been the girls' mentor for the past 12 months and she said they should be close to their peak.
"I've coached them individually in the past three years and they all have the mental and physical attributes to go international," she said.
"Obviously apart from being physically fit, to be mentally fit is important for international competition as well.
"They are all in the right age group."
