Guardiola knows City must improve

FOOTBALL: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his side must improve if it is to match it with the best sides in Europe.

City will go into this week's opening Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach on the back of a 2-1 win in the Manchester derby to keep up its 100% record in the English Premier League.

The Sky Blues are on top of the ladder with Chelsea playing Swansea overnight but Guardiola said the chances of his team winning the Champions League crown were slim.

"We are not ready to compete with the best clubs in," Guardiola told reporters.

"We are creating well but we need more in front.

"But if we want to play against the best clubs in Europe we are not able to compete the way we are playing.

"But we have only been together two months, so we have time to get better."

City was dominant in the first half and went two goals up through Kevin de Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho.

But a mistake from Chile keeper Claudio Bravo allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score just before the break.

United improved in the second half and could have had a second after Bravo slid in on Wayne Rooney in the penalty area.

It looked as if the keeper had caught the England captain but referee Mark Clattenburg, waved play on, much to the annoyance of United boss Jose Mourinho, whose team lost for the first time this season.

There were plenty of goals elsewhere, with Liverpool scoring four in a 4-1 win over reigning champion Leicester City at Anfield.

Tottenham matched the Reds, winning 4-0 at Stoke, which is still searching for a first league success and sits bottom.

Watford slammed in four at the London Stadium on its way to defeating West Ham 4-2.

Arsenal beat Southampton 2-1, Bournemouth won 1-0 at home to West Brom, while Crystal Palace won 2-1 at Middlesbrough.

Burnley and Hull City drew 1-1.
