US military can wait, I'm going to be a Coast lifeguard

HOUSTON Park was set to start training in US military pararescue but was convinced donning the yellow and red on the Sunshine Coast was the better option.

The 20-year-old Palm Beach lifeguard was so taken by fellow Floridian Guy Holling's account of his first year patrolling our beaches that he decided to put his military plans on hold to check it out for himself.

And he hasn't been disappointed.

"Right now I love it," he said. "It's really laid back and there are a lot of good

people. It's going to be hard to leave it."

Mr Park will begin patrolling our northern beaches alongside Mat Meyer, from California, and Bert Wight, from Cornwall, in the UK.

Lifeguards from Denmark have been posted to Mackay and Townsville and others will make their way to Bribie Island, Rainbow Beach and Stradbroke Island.

Sunshine Coast Lifeguard supervisor Anthony King said Surf Life Saving Queensland undertook a recruitment drive every year to ensure there were enough lifeguards on the beaches during the busiest holiday season of the year.

Having spent the previous summer patrolling at Noosa, Mr Holling was looking forward to being based at Coolum this year.

The 26-year-old said the word of mouth was quickly spreading around the globe about how great it was to work with the Sunshine Coast lifeguards.

"I got Houston out here and the Danish guys posted up north heard about it from the guys who did the previous cycle," he said.

"It's just such a great, laid-back lifestyle where people aren't too concerned about the hustle and bustle you can get caught up in."

Lifeguard hours have now been extended at major locations from 7am to 6pm.
