'Grub' father's selfish acts risk baby's life

A 'COWARD' father had been using meth before he risked the life of a police officer and his own infant child when he drove dangerously, nearly hit a fence and sped off down the wrong side of a road to evade police.

Justin Zachariah Djordjevic, 27, was approached by a police officer in plain clothes on July 25 while in a stolen vehicle with his partner and child in the backseat.

When the officer showed his badge, Djordjevic locked the doors and reversed into the street where the officer hung onto the door handle for more than 50m before finally letting go.

The incident was one of three serious vehicle incidents in three months.

Djordjevic was previously caught on CCTV at a service station in a stolen car. It was found the next day burned out.

Two months later, police initiated lights and sirens at Djordjevic for speeding. He sped off down the wrong side of a busy highway and police deployed tyre spikes.

Djordjevic pleaded guilty to 16 charges in Maroochydore Magistrates Court including, eight driving offences and multiple drug charges.

He was on parole at the time of his arrest and appeared via video-link from prison with supporters in the gallery watching on.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said his "selfish" actions could have led to worse outcomes.

"He (the police officer) could so easily have gone under the car," he said.

"No regard for anyone's safety... your own baby's safety.

"What a grub, what a coward."

The court heard of Djordjevic's extensive four-page criminal history starting in 2012 which was almost "entirely drug and car offences".

Lawyer Lachlan Ygoa-McKeown said his client had been struggling with the sudden death of a friend who was accidentally killed by a gunshot in a vehicle incident.

He also said Djordjevic admitted to police of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the second incident.

Mr McLaughlin said he could understand how the tragic incident may trip his drug abuse, but it had the opposite effect on his string of car crimes.

Djordjevic sat with his head in his hands as Mr McLaughlin recited his crimes saying his "arrogance and boldness" to safety was concerning.

"You've put innocent lives at risk," he said.

Djordjevic was sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment with a parole eligibility date of August 19, 2019.
