GLADSTONE Men's Shed is booming out of its walls, with new members turning up every month to try their hand at woodwork and metalwork.

On Thursday they welcomed delegates from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, who presented a cheque for $5000 to the shed.

Shed secretary Ron Steen was grateful for the donation, which he said would go towards buying timber and consumables.

The shed's 60 members have made more than 800 items for preschools and kindergartens through a Communities for Children program, including blackboards, xylophones, easels and wooden trays.

The program was funded by GAPDL and is now being followed by $15,000 from the Gladstone Ports Corpor-ation.

More important though is seeing the enjoyment on the men's faces as they work and when the children play with the handmade toys.

WHAT IS A MEN'S SHED?

The modern Men's Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture. Men's Sheds are springing up throughout Australia.

If you looked inside one you might see a number of men restoring furniture or fixing lawn mowers or making a kids' cubby house for Camp Quality to raffle.

You might also see young men working with the older men, learning new skills and learning something about life from the men they work with.

You will see tea bags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk.

You will probably also see an area where men can learn to cook for themselves or they can learn how to contact their families by computer.
