Greenpeace slams expansion plans for Abbot Point terminal

GREENPEACE has likened plans to grow Abbot Point Coal Terminal in North Queensland to slicing up a piece of art and smearing it with tomato sauce.

The environmental activists are fuming following the release of a cumulative impact report from three mining giants and the ports company, about how best to manage the multi-billion-dollar expansion project.

BHP Billiton, GVK Hancock and Adani with North Queensland Bulk Ports volunteered information to help build the report.

NQBP chief executive Brad Fish said the Great Barrier Reef would be protected, even as the port created financial benefits and jobs for the state.

"It is important that future development provides confidence to the community that world class environmental planning and management will be applied in an area adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef," Mr Fish said.

Greenpeace has questioned how the companies plan to deal with its impacts on marine turtles, humpback whales, threatened species and an internationally significant wetland.

"This assessment makes it clear the coal industry seriously considers the Great Barrier Reef as the next sacrifice zone in their business agenda and Queenslanders will never accept that."

Comment can be made on the report until December 4.

It is available from www.abbotpointworkinggroup.com.au.
