Greenpeace hits out over miners’ cash to parties

GREENPEACE has hit back at an LNP Senator's call for the environmental organisation to lose tax-deductible donation eligibility, saying political parties receive such donations from the mining industry.

On Sunday, Queensland Senator Matt Canavan criticised the group for its "illegal activity" and called for its tax-deductible status to be revoked.

His call comes amid a Federal Government inquiry into the political activities of groups listed on the Register of Environmental Organisations.

Greenpeace program director Emma Gibson said the group was "undeterred by the continued outrageous attack" from the Coalition.

She said the inquiry was seeking to "silence Australians" concerned about environmental issues including the Great Barrier Reef and climate change.

"The LNP are attacking donations given by hardworking Australian mums and dads while they themselves receive tax deductible donations from the mining industry," she said.
