Great friendships made during week at childcare centre

Nakiya Flint, of Miriam Vale State School, reports on her work experience at Agnes Water Child Care Centre.

WOW, what a week! My name is Nakiya Flint and I attend Miriam Vale State School.

From the 16th to the 20th we participated in work experience.

For work experience week I went to the Agnes Water Childcare Centre.

It was an amazing experience and I enjoyed it.

When the week started I was a bit nervous but the friendly staff and little rascals helped me settle in quite well.

During my time at the childcare centre I worked with all the age groups.

Some of the duties I undertook were; preparing lunch, helping with rest time procedures and supervising eating and play time.

I value this experience and it will be something I will always remember.

On my first day, there was a girl called Sharnia who hadn't been attending the childcare centre for some time.

When her mum left her, she cried a lot. She helped me settle in because every time I picked her up and comforted her she would stop crying.

It was like I had the magic touch and that made me happy. I was not ready to leave on the last day.

I had made excellent friendships with the kids and almost cried.

Reef, Jonah and Paul would have to be my favourite kids; they were very welcoming and loved me straight away.

In the Kindy room we learnt about Harry Hat Man, made Easter baskets and put on an excellent Frozen concert for Leanna.

Marley turned 4 and got a camera for his birthday. Hearing all the kids sing happy birthday was an experience within itself.

On Friday the 20th Greg Williams from the Agnes Water Police Station came and showed the kids the dune buggy and talked to the children about stranger danger and road safety.

I have never seen kids so excited before.

Although some of the kids weren't the best listeners, we got around all the problems.

Now that I have experienced the work involved with childcare I can see myself in this career in the future.

I am extremely happy with my time at the Agnes Water Childcare Centre.

It has helped me make informed decisions about the career I will pursue in the near future.

I hope to go back and visit the kids often and see them all grow up to be bright young adults.
