Grand final reaches meteoric heights

JUNIOR SOCCER: A golden blow by Tegan Van Vegchel in a penalty shoot-out guided Meteor Majestics to a superb 4-3 win in the under 16 girls grand final against gallant Central Firebirds on Friday night.

Scores were locked away at 1-1 at the end of full-time and 20-minutes of extra time after Firebirds' Jacynta Sailor made it anyone's game.

Meteors looked the better team on a rain-sodden BITS pitch and they were rewarded when Ainsley Downie made it 1-0 from a penalty strike.

Jaimee-Lee Hickey and Rachael Crawford plenty of drive for Meteor Majestics while Tegan was here usual assertive self as goal-keeper.

Perhaps Meteors could have been further in front and coach Jean Van Vegchel pointed this out during her half-time address.

Central Firebirds' coach Michael Hogg says his team accomplished a lot despite the loss and those goals were literally reached on Friday night.

"It was not bad, we could'nt score against Meteors all season and come the grand final, we managed three goals," Hogg said.

"Penalties was the only difference."
