Grand final already a win for Valleys netball player
KAILA Kirkwood and her teams mates cheered like they had won the grand final, when in reality, a 15-9 result in the semi-final had only booked a spot in one next Tuesday.
But for the Valleys Gold team, getting so far is enough of a win already.
After being a team thrown together and winning only two matches in the 2014 season, the difference to this year has been remarkable.
Kaila has even been surprised by the team, even though she had high hopes.
"At the start of the year, I was not sure how we would play," she said.
"But as we went, I thought we could do very well."
Over the moon with just making a grand final, the 11-year-old and her team mates are not stopping there and not giving up.
They will play another Valleys team for the title and will go in as the underdogs.
"We have played them before and we didn't win, but we played well," she said.
"I hope we can get them next week."
Kaila said the key is team work.
It is why she decided to play netball in the first place. "I started because it is a team sport. I used to do gymnastics but with netball, I work as a team member and play with my friends," she said.
Two years in, Kaila knows she has made the right choice.
The thrill of scoring and winning is more than she expected.
"The best part was winning, and I scored as well, but we worked well together," she said.
Kaila shared the experience with her mum, who coaches the team.
She will play in the grand final next Tuesday at the Memorial Park courts.
