Govt releases new guide to travel insurance

AFTER the Abbott government moved to stop paying the costs of uninsured Australians in strife overseas, it has released a new guide to travel insurance.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop released the guide, written by consumer group Choice, on Thursday.

She said some insurance industry data showed about 19% of Australians who travelled overseas in the past two years did not have travel insurance.

"The Australian Government will not meet expenses if travellers are uninsured, including expensive overseas hospital and medical evacuation," she said.

In a bid to encourage more people to pay for travel insurance, the guide has information about what people are, and are not, covered for under insurance policies.

Ms Bishop said all travellers, whether young school leavers or more experienced, should register their details and read the guide before leaving.
