Good friends, great rivalry in Tannum Sands nippers

LILY McClure is the best under-10 at the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club but if Annali Philpott has her way that could change quickly.

Lily, 9, usually wins the flags and sprint competitions at Nipper training on Sunday mornings - and yesterday was no exception.

"Yes, I'm pretty good at them but I have some competition on the board and swim," Lily said. "Neve (Smart) sometimes beats me at the swim and Annali on the board."

Lily is working on a new technique this season for getting off the ground in the flags.

She has been digging her knee into the sand as she turns around and placing her foot in the hole to power off.

But her training needs to top Annali's, who has been spurred on to beat her.

"I don't like losing to Lily all the time. We're friends but I don't like it," Annali, 9, said.

"At carnivals I get a little scared when she cuts in front of me in flags. One day I just want to beat her."

On Sunday Annali did beat her in the board contest.

"I'm pretty happy about that," she said.

"I have been training in the winter and she (Lily) hasn't so I am hoping I can start beating her more often.

"I like the swim event because I get in front of her."

With such competitive young girls, the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club could be looking at a one-two in the Ironwoman Nutri-Grain Series in years to come.
